The work of scientific researchers has a socio-political, cultural, technological and environmental context. Social scientists should comprehend and integrate those realities, designing and directing their research agendas within these contexts and allowing them to inform their research activities, be they competitive or collaborative, individual or in teams and inter-institutional communities, aiming at the creation and continuous, sustainable dissemination of scientific knowledge and the advancement of mankind. The programme covers the perspectives, mechanisms, and tools (including training) for the construction of scientific knowledge by social scientists, to the reality of the knowledge-based organizations which act and interact in broader systemic contexts. Syllabus: - What is science? The nature of science and scientific activity. - The structure of scientific revolutions according to Thomas Khun - Karl Popper and the ?The Logic of Scientific Discovery? - Realist philosophers in the social sciences - A realist approach to methodology in the social sciences (Baskhar and Sayer) - Critical postmodern positions on science (Fayerabend) - What is a research project and how to produce a personal research agenda - Literature search and review ? structure and style: how to write essays and papers; how to write articles for publication, ethics and scientific activity - How to write and defend a doctoral thesis.

The expected earning outcomes of the curricular unit are: 1. Familiarisation with the main meta-theories on the nature of scientific knowledge and the processes by which it is generated, from three standpoints: methodology, epistemology, axiology. Students will learn to identify and characterise the meta-theoretical positions adopted by the authors of previously published scientific works, along different lines and in different research traditions. 2. Students will acquire conceptual frameworks that will permit them to understand: a) the nature of scientific research in different disciplines and contexts, b) deliberate and emergent processes in the production, reproduction and ?falsification? of scientific knowledge, c) research in the context of a PhD: a. Training in the use of conceptual tools for carrying out research, creating a research agenda and carrying out a research project; b. Motivation and skills for scientific reading and writing; c. Ability to discuss controversial issues in scientific research.
