Objectivos

At the level of learning outcomes:

1) To acknowledge the relevance of social background in explaining economic facts and of time and space variables in explaining social and economic facts.
2) To analyse the performance of economies and organisations in different social, political and cultural contexts.
At the level of the development of instrumental and interpersonal capacities:

a) Selecting and working on relevant data;
b) Analytical and synthesising skills;
c) Oral and written skills.

Programa

Introduction - From a world of multiple self-sufficient economies to a world of a single self-sufficient economy

Chapter 1 - The economy of the world before modern economic growth;
Chapter 2 - Modern economic growth: an overview;
Chapter 3 - The beginnings of modern economic growth (late eighteenth and early nineteenth century);
Chapter 4 - Consolidation of modern economic growth (mid-nineteenth century);
Chapter 5 - The first globalization and the beginnings of the contemporary world economy (late nineteenth and early twentieth century);
Chapter 6 - The times of globalization backlash (the world wars and the period between the world wars of the twentieth century);
Chapter 7 - The times of the division of the world economy and society (third quarter of the twentieth century);
Chapter 8 - The second globalization and the world economy of the early twenty-first century;
Chapter 9 - The future of the world economy: sustainability and development in the twenty-first century.

Metodologia de avaliação

Normal assessment period

Students shall choose either scheme A or scheme B.

Scheme A
There will be two types of assessment elements, both of individual character:
a) A semester-based assessment.
b) A written, closed-book examination.
The semester-based assessment and the written examination will have the same weight in the final grade.
If the grade of the written examination ranks below 8, it will be the final grade.

Scheme B
The final grade is the grade of the written, closed-book examination.

Repeat Examination Period
The final grade is the grade of the written, closed-book examination.
If the semester-based assessment exists and is higher than the grade of the written examination, the semester-based assessment and the written examination will have the same weight in the final grade.
If the grade of the written examination ranks below 8, it will be the final grade.
