Breve introdução

(ENGLISH)
The activity of a country is defined as being a series of facts, which are recorded by statistics. Therefore, statistics are required to obtain knowledge about these facts. However, the complexity of such activity and the innumerable facts and statistics involved makes this task difficult, and sometimes impossible. The challenge lies in defining the best hierarchy of facts, identifying the correct network of linkages between them, ensuring the availability of statistics, and making use of good working tools. These tools, or work instruments, should enable us to interpret the reality under study and consequently carry out empirical research which is not only capable of highlighting specific aspects of this activity, but which provides the opportunity to simulate different ways in which it works. .

A atividade de um país é entendida como um conjunto de factos, os quais são registados pelas estatísticas. Deste modo, o conhecimento desses fatos envolverá necessariamente a utilização de estatísticas. No entanto, a complexidade dessa atividade e os inúmeros factos e estatísticas tornam a tarefa difícil e, por vezes, não exequível. O desafio está na definição da melhor hierarquia de factos, na identificação da correta rede de ligações entre eles, na disponibilidade de estatísticas e na utilização de boas ferramentas de trabalho. Essas ferramentas ou instrumentos de trabalho devem permitir a leitura da realidade em estudo e um trabalho empírico que possa não só evidenciar aspetos específicos dessa atividade, mas também simular intervenções no seu funcionamento.
